“The Church wisely and repeatedly insists that adult faith formation is essential to who we are and what we do as Church and must be situated, not at the periphery of the Church’s education mission, but at its center.”
– Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, US Catholic Bishops
In keeping with the instruction of the US Catholic Bishops, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is committed to offering a wide variety of adult education, formation and enrichment programs throughout the year. The journey of faith is a lifelong journey!
We invite you to explore some of our programs as we journey together!
The RCIA is the process by which a person enters the Catholic faith. The process includes preparation for and the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Formal sessions begin in September, however, informal sessions begin whenever a person comes forward.
Parish members can be sponsors. It is a wonderful way to renew one’s knowledge of the Catholic faith. Sponsors attend the RCIA sessions from September through Easter.
We also offer an Initiation process for youth and teens.
Adult Bible Study
Bible Study meets on Tuesdays from September through November and again from January through March. For your convenience, two sessions are offered – morning and evening.
Fr. Robert Carroll, O. Carm., PhD is our instructor.
Some of our past Bible Studies have included:
“The Song of Songs”
“Lenten Inspiration: Elijah Prepares for Jesus”
“The Psalms as Literature, Song, and Prayer”
“The Boys in the Boat – Literature & Scripture”
“Year of Pilgrimage: A Biblical Journey”
Other Bible Studies are occasionally offered at different times, as well.
Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet
The Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet is a 4-year program to study every book of the Bible. We use one of the best Catholic Bible studies ever developed for learning Scripture in a systematic way, the Catholic Biblical School Program (Paulist Press). Students earn certificates in Basic Biblical Studies (2 years) and Advanced Biblical Studies (4 years), from this nationally recognized program. You’ll study the Bible as a whole and in its parts from a Catholic point of view, with experienced teachers, and within a Catholic faith community.
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is a site for this bible study. This year we will be studying, New Testament Foundations: Jesus and Discipleship. Classes meet on Wednesday evenings, 7-9 pm, from September through May.
If interested, contact Margaret Pinas.
Movie of the Month
Join us each month as we share a movie depicting the life of a Saint. These movies are free and for your convenience are offered in the morning and evening.
Morning and Evening Enrichment Programs
We offer a variety of different opportunities throughout the year that seek to give us different experiences of faith; whether it be to welcome a guest speaker, visit an area shrine, tour a church, or attend a special movie or concert. Events are advertised in the bulletin and online.
A four-week session is offered twice a year (October and March) to help those who have lost a loved one understand and better cope with the process of grieving. Lin Bresnahan, LCSW, is the facilitator of these sessions.
Young at Heart Club
We invite all adults 55+ to join us monthly for friends, food, fun, entertainment and information. Young at Hearts meet the 1st Thursday of each month from September through December and from February through July. In addition to the monthly meetings, the group sponsors 2-3 outings a year.
Women’s Night Out
Women of the parish gather 5-6 times a year for spiritual and social enrichment. A variety of interesting programs are offered giving women a chance to gather with friends, learn or try something new and enjoy each other’s company over refreshments.
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel has a vibrant Cursillo community. Cursillo is a four day retreat weekend offered through the diocese of Joliet that allows Catholics to grow in their faith. Check out their website for more information.
