Fifth graders may have very big imaginations and can begin to understand abstract reasoning. They are beginning to understand how symbols and signs have certain meaning. They are also entering a new stage of identity development and can consider their individual gifts as something meant to be shared with others. Fifth graders will also learn better through muliple methods. Team work should be encouraged.
Our fifth graders focus on the Seven Sacraments and the Rubrics of the Mass. They will learn how the symbols associated with the Sacraments and the Mass are essential in helping us understand the transcendence of God. We receive his Grace in the Sacraments and especially in the gift of the Eucharist.
We will focus on the Mass and its parts. Since we are focusing on the Mass, the lessons from the book will correspond more directly to the Lectionary Calendar. Please make sure that your children are following their homework schedules.
We use the "Alive in Christ" series for Fifth Grade, along with the "Mass to Mission" books from LTP. Your child will receive the "Mass to Mission" books in the second half of the year.
When we meet, the children should have already read the chapter for the week and finished any work in the chapter so they can ask questions about the lesson. The more prepared the children are, the better they can grasp the material being taught in the classroom. Of note, since the fifth grade curriculum follows the Mass, the lessons correspond to the Lectionary Year and do not follow in order. Please check your child's Homework Schedule below, or follow the schedule taped in the front of his or her book.
We also encourage families to read the Gospel for the corresponding Sunday. The reading can be found in the "Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families" book that is handed out during the Parent Meetings at the beginning of the year.
Your Children should know the prayers from Pre-school through fourth grade and learn:
Family Mass
Third Sunday of each month at the 10:00 Mass,
5th graders will lead the Mass celebration on Sunday, November 17
Teaching Mass
